Different epochs are reflected in the colour scheme
Architecture can be elucidated through the choice of colours. Different epochs are reflected in the colour scheme. Today it is also possible to identify national, regional and local differences in the choice of colours. In order to receive a complete impression, it is necessary for the choice of colours to harmonise with the architecture from each epoch and each geographical region. This was the guide for a postgraduate project at Lund University with the aim to deepen our knowledge of local variations in the choice of exterior colours.
Stage one in the study was to identify groups of buildings of equal architectural merit in which paint layers are preserved. The previous history of the buildings was then documented through analyses of paint sections. One of the questions which the results have given rise to is whether there was local production of pigments and local paints that are completely forgotten today. During the project it became clear that there is reason to make investigations of groups of buildings in order to deepen our knowledge of the choice of colours and of the local and regional identity of the built environment.
