Increased mobility provides more opportunities
An improved transport infrastructure is of great importance for welfare; this had not been noted before with regard to local distribution effects. The way access to, and the distribution of, transport resources affects the supply facilities for different groups is now undergoing rapid change. Increased mobility makes for several opportunities outside agriculture, for delocalisation.
The groups with the worst access to facilities are women and the poor. There is now a need to study the coupling between transpoort improvements for different groups of women and the relationship between transport investments and the alleviation of poverty.
Access to transport resources is increasing and different activities are spread geographically, which increases the demand for mobility. This development is contrary to long term sustainable social development, but one way of dealing with social inequality is nevertheless increasing accessibility.
The objective of the project was to investigate transport investments and the consequent imprpovement in access for transport-excluded groups. The study focuses on conditions in the Phillippines.
