Smart windows can be regulated between a dark and a light state, in order to minimise overheating in the summer and to maximise the admission of solar heat in the winter. Andreas Jonsson of the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, has in his thesis developed the programme WinSel for simulating energy fluxes through windows, so that a control system controls the window in about the same way as a blind. It will also regulate the windows on the basis of daylight needs when the premises are occupied and on the basis of energy needs when they are unoccupied. Optical characterisation and antireflex treatment of the glass and plastics were important components for the study of further energy saving measures in buildings.
