The mercury contents in fish from Swedish lakes have continued to increase over the past 10 years. Studies of 2000 Swedish lakes show that contents are three-five times higher than the natural background level. The mercury that is deposited over Sweden comes from emissions linked to combustion processes in other European countries. Climate change is thought to be a culprit in the process where fallout increases mercury contents in the soil which, in turn, increases leakage of mercury to our waters and thus the fish.
- Fallout from other countries in Europe must be reduced by 80 per cent, say researchers at SLU.
