Eels in Europe are still in a state of crisis. Swedish Board of Fisheries proposes that eel fishing should be cut by half until 2013, that migration past hydroelectric plants should be improved, and that more eels should be released for restocking, beyond the obstacles to migration. In 2009, eel fishing will be reduced by a fifth as a first step. On the Swedish west coast, a close season of about 4.5 months is proposed. On the east coast and in freshwater areas, closed seasons, specific to a certain place and the number of implements, will be introduced. Each eel fisherman will be allocated a certain fishing period based on the area they are fishing in.
